Bahama Mama cruise-ferry

Operated by Balearia – The Bahama Mama, a 1,000-passenger cruise ferry, began sailing in February from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport.

It replaced Bahamas Express’ smaller Pinar del Rio fast-catamaran, which had room for 463 passengers and offered little to do on board.

Bahama Mama has economy and first class seating, 48 cabins, several restaurants, bars and lounges, a casino, swimming pool and duty-free shopping, among others.

Some frequent travellers are elated.

The cruise-ferry departs from Port Everglades Terminal 1 at 8 a.m. for arrival in Freeport at 12 p.m.

Returning, it’s scheduled to leave Freeport at 7 p.m. to arrive in Fort Lauderdale at 11 p.m.

Rates for the one-day round trip start at $119 per adult for economy class and $150 for first class, according to Bahamas Express. Cabin rates are additional, and food and beverages are available for purchase.

The Bahama Mama also has a 200-container capacity that can accommodate cars, pets and other types of cargo.

Bahama Mama is expected to make about 300 cruises annually and carry more than 300,000 tourists to and from Grand Bahama Island, officials have said.

Passengers can enjoy a quick day trip to Freeport or stay longer on one- two- or three-night cruise packages, which are launching soon, he said. “The ride will take four hours, but it will be like a small cruise.”
