The Dominican Republic occupies two thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. It is the second largest Caribbean nation and the site of the first permanent settlement of Europeans in the Americas.
The Dominican Republic has some of the best white sand beaches in the Caribbean. They are lined with coconut palms making it an attractive island to visit. In palm-thatched huts they are barbecuing the catch of the day and serving potent rum punches, all set to the soundtrack of sultry merengue. Water sports are normally available on the beaches east of Santo Domingo and along the north coast. The southwest beaches are less frequented but popular with windsurfers.

When to go to the Dominican Republic
The high season runs from mid December to mid April when hotel prices will rise and you will need to book up to a year in advance to get the best deals.

Local Customs – It is customary to dress smart casual when dining out at restaurants and locals only wear beachwear on the beach.

Security in the Dominican Republic - Many visitors travel to the island each year and do not have any incidents however we recommend that you do not change money in the street and exercise caution at all times.
Take advice from the locals as to any city areas you should avoid at all times and do not leave your belongings unattended on the beach. We do not recommend walking around Santo Domingo late at night. Use your hotel safe or security boxes to store your valuables. Avoid driving at night outside towns.
Other Risks - When taking a boat trip check that the boat operator has sails or oars in the event of an engine breakdown, a radio and lifejackets and equipment in the event of a fire. Accidents do happen and boats can break down. When sourcing a water sport provider that is not affiliated to your hotel, make sure they are properly licenced to provide those services, avoid approaches on the beach from vendors offering water sport.
